Visit of the First Gentleman to the Minefields of Aghdam

ANAMA experts presented to the delegation various methods used for clearing anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, including manual mine detection, the use of specialized demining machinery, and the deployment of specially trained mine detection dogs. The training and operational use of mine detection dogs has been supported by the Slovenian-based ITF through a financial contribution from the Republic of Korea. The results have demonstrated the programme’s high effectiveness, particularly in areas with extremely challenging conditions and a high concentration of anti-tank mines. During the visit, it was emphasized that successful mine action relies on long-term international cooperation and the support of partners such as ITF, which enables the application of modern methods and technologies for safer and more efficient clearance of mine-contaminated areas.
 
As part of the visit, Dr. Musar also toured the new city of Aghdam, which Azerbaijan is constructing on the site of the former city that was completely destroyed during a conflict lasting more than three decades. The new Aghdam stands as a remarkable example of post-conflict reconstruction and the restoration of life in areas that until recently were among the most mine-affected in the region. With its modern infrastructure, new residential neighbourhoods, schools, commercial facilities, and transport links, the city demonstrates that mine clearance is the essential first step toward development and the return of displaced populations. International partners and donors, including the Republic of Korea and ITF, play an important role in this process by supporting projects that create the conditions necessary for the safe return of displaced families and the sustainable development of liberated areas.
 
At the conclusion of his visit, Dr. Musar met in the city of Tartar with representatives of the mine victims’ organization IEPF (International Eurasia Press Fund), which is supported by ITF through a donation from the Republic of Korea. The organization’s representatives expressed their gratitude for the support received to date and presented new forms of cooperation with the Azerbaijan Mine Victims Association and the Azerbaijan Campaign to Ban Landmines. Particular attention was devoted to programmes aimed at the socio-economic empowerment of mine victims, including microcredit schemes for the purchase of livestock, the development of small businesses and crafts, and other livelihood activities that help beneficiaries return more quickly to independent and dignified lives.
 
The participants stressed that assistance to mine victims extends far beyond rehabilitation following injury. It also involves creating new opportunities for social inclusion and economic participation. In this regard, donor support, the work of local organizations, and partnership with the Slovenian humanitarian organization ITF remain key factors in achieving lasting success.
