8. junija obeležujemo svetovni dan oceanov.

We live on a blue planet

June 8 is World Oceans Day. Oceans and seas cover most of Earth's surface and this year's theme is “Planet Ocean: tides are changing”. Earth is the only planet in the universe we know so far that is rich with water. Even our bodies carry large amount of water, where important biological and chemical processes are constantly taking place.

Earlier this week, we marked World Environment Day. This year, it was dedicated to reducing plastic pollution. The consequences of wasteful habits, when plastic packaging is used once and then thrown away, can be seen on coasts and seas all over the world. Luckily, the amount of plastic waste is decreasing in Slovenia, which is encouraging.

In Slovenia, traffic roads have been moved from the coastal strip, which resulted in as much as 10 per cent of land returning to its natural form. Now, people can enjoy natural cliffs and a beautiful avenue of pine trees that stretches from Izola to Koper.

The Slovenian story of returning coast to its natural form is an exceptional example on a global level and proves that we know how to unite in caring for our environment. I wish this unity would lead us onwards in caring for the preservation of our blue planet – both in Slovenia and rest of the world.
