THE POWER OF THE WORD (The President’s podcast) – #11: Marinka Žitnik PhD

Dr. Marinka Žitnik is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, an affiliate at MIT, and a faculty member of the Harvard Data Science Initiative. She is the first Slovenian woman to hold a professorship at this prestigious institution. As a computer scientist, she studies applied machine learning and focuses on the challenges posed by data in science, medicine, and health.

Dr. Žitnik recently led a study on the permanent emigration of young educated people abroad and on the necessary measures that would enable them to return home. The main goal of the research, conducted within the framework of the ASEF Foundation, was to develop a comprehensive analytical model for evaluating existing policies, programs, and incentives aimed at encouraging the return of educated citizens. The findings of this study address one of Slovenia’s key developmental challenges, as more educated Slovenians leave the country each year than return. The central question remains: what can be done to reverse this trend?
