Slovenia stands in solidarity with Ukraine and with the millions of people, who never sought this war

Tomorrow, two years will pass since the Russian military aggression on Ukraine. On this occasion, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, addressed the diplomatic corps that gathered at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs as a sign of support for Ukraine and its people. As a sign of support, the flag of Ukraine was ceremoniously hoisted in front of the Ministry, and those gathered observed a minute of silence to honour the victims of the war.

In her address, the President of the Republic of Slovenia noted that over the past 100 years, the people of Ukraine have endured immense suffering through numerous wars and collective massacres and even today, the nation continues to grapple with ongoing aggression from Russia. “Ukraine's territorial integrity is being violated. International law, including the United Nations Charter, is being blatantly trampled on. Too many Ukrainian lives are being lost as the country tries to defend itself,” she said and reiterated Slovenia’s continued firm commitment to supporting Ukraine and to ensuring that all those responsible for the crimes committed on the territory of Ukraine are held accountable. “Slovenia stands in solidarity with Ukraine and with the millions of people, not only on the Ukrainian side, who never sought this war,” the President was clear.

President Pirc Musar also pointed out anxiety disorders, prolonged stress and shock - the "silent and terrifying consequences of wars" in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, Yemen and elsewhere, which Olena Zelenska, the wife of the Ukrainian president, is bringing to light through her foundation and advocacy work. The President promised that Slovenia would help Ukraine within its capabilities and with the help of NGOs in alleviating the consequences of the war. Slovenia would help with psychosocial support for women and children, rehabilitation and demining. “The people of Ukraine will need our support and yours long after the guns have fallen silent,” she addressed the members of the Diplomatic Corps in Slovenia.

“Slovenia emphasises that any solution to this conflict that does not respect Ukraine as a sovereign state on an equal and fair basis cannot and will not be acceptable to the international community. Any alternative outcome entails a resurgence of imperialism, territorial ambitions, and an attempt to “rectify historical wrongs” in Europe. Such a scenario would mean the end of the international order established since 1945, order based on the principles of sovereign equality and the territorial integrity of states,” said the President when concluding her address, stressing that the future can only be envisioned and shaped in an atmosphere of peace and stability, under the rule of international law.

Those gathered at the ceremony were also addressed by the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia Tanja Fajon (via video link) and the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Slovenia Andryy Taran.

Last year, on the first anniversary of the Russian military aggression on Ukraine, the President of the Republic of Slovenia hosted a gathering in the Presidential Palace as a sign of support for Ukraine and sympathy for its people. Olena Zelenska addressed those attending via video link, and the President invited refugees from Ukraine, who found refuge in Slovenia, to attend the gathering.
