The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, welcomes today's Order of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the South Africa v. Israel case, indicating provisional measures regarding the war in the Gaza Strip. The rule of law requires all parties to fully respect and comply with all ICJ’s rulings. In doing so, the international community and Slovenia, too, must provide clear and decisive support for ICJ’s order that is binding by international law.

ICJ largely adhered to arguments of South Africa as a country, which filed an application against the State of Israel under the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and ordered Israel a series of provisional measures due to the imminent threat of irreparable harm.

The President therefore expects that this will put an end to the massacres of the civilian population as a collateral damage to the war's objectives and that urgent humanitarian aid will reach all the residents of the Gaza Strip.

Slovenia is a party to the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The President calls on all parties to respect ICJ’s order. At the same time, she also urges for a cease-fire as a precondition for a negotiated solution to the Middle East conflict and coexistence of both Israel and Palestine, side by side, in peace and in safety.
