President Pirc Musar hosts President Gitanas Nausėda of Lithuania on a working visit

President of the Republic of Slovenia Nataša Pirc Musar is hosting President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda on a working visit to Slovenia. The visit is part of Lithuania's preparations for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2027 and provides an opportunity to further strengthen political dialogue and cooperation between the two countries, as well as to exchange views on current European and international issues.

The President of the Republic of Slovenia and the President of Lithuania reaffirmed the excellent and friendly relations between the two countries and underscored the importance of close cooperation within the European Union, NATO, the United Nations and other international organisations. They agreed that unity and cooperation among Member States are essential in addressing the many security, economic and geopolitical challenges facing Europe today.

Particular attention was paid to Lithuania's preparations for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. President Nausėda outlined the priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency, which will focus on strengthening the European Union's resilience, competitiveness, security and global role. President Pirc Musar expressed Slovenia's commitment to close cooperation with Lithuania during its Presidency.

The Presidents also discussed the future of the European Union and the enlargement process. President Pirc Musar emphasised that Slovenia remains a firm supporter of European Union enlargement, particularly with regard to the Western Balkans, and that enlargement is a geostrategic investment in the peace, stability and security of the European continent. The Presidents also exchanged views on the progress of Ukraine and Moldova towards EU membership.

A significant part of the discussions focused on security issues. The Presidents underscored the importance of strengthening European security and defence in close cooperation with NATO and highlighted the need for continued support for Ukraine. President Pirc Musar reiterated her support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, based on international law and accompanied by appropriate security guarantees.

The Presidents also discussed developments in the Middle East and the hybrid threats facing European countries, and President Nausėda briefed President Pirc Musar on the situation in Belarus. They agreed that respect for international law and effective multilateral cooperation remain essential prerequisites for addressing contemporary global challenges.

The Presidents also discussed economic cooperation between the two countries. Economic cooperation between Slovenia and Lithuania continues to grow, while further opportunities for collaboration exist in the fields of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, the green transition, energy, and defence and dual-use technologies.

The Presidents reaffirmed their shared commitment to effective multilateralism based on the Charter of the United Nations and their support for efforts to reform the UN Security Council in order to enhance its effectiveness, representativeness and legitimacy.
