President Pirc Musar begins state visit to Kenya, with a focus on global justice and Slovenia's expertise in water resource protection

On the first day of her state visit to Kenya, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, held a bilateral meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto. Their discussions focused on climate resilience, Africa's role in global governance and specific joint projects – with particular emphasis on the Slovenian-Kenyan development programme for the digital monitoring of water resources.

"Climate change is not just an environmental issue – it is a question of peace, human dignity and access to basic resources. And water is the most precious of these," emphasised President Pirc Musar. With one of its most advanced development initiatives in Kenya – the Digital Twin River Ecosystem project – Slovenia is combining the cutting-edge expertise of Slovenian scientists with the needs of the most vulnerable communities in East Africa.

Based on satellite data and modelling, the project enables improved water resource management in the Omo, Mara, Lumi and Dawa river basins, as well as around Lake Victoria and Lake Turkana. "This is a true example of a partnership for the future, where science, technology and international solidarity work hand in hand for a safer, more sustainable and more equitable world," the President stated.

During the visit, the two heads of state signed a memorandum on political cooperation and agreed on concrete steps to enhance economic collaboration in artificial intelligence, beekeeping and pharmaceutical production. Trade between the two countries reached EUR 2.7 million in 2024, marking a 50% increase compared to the previous year.

In addition to climate resilience, the two presidents welcomed initiatives promoting greater equality within multilateral organisations, emphasising the importance of increased representation of women and countries from the Global South in decision-making processes. Slovenia expressed its support for Kenya's efforts to stabilise the region and acknowledged the country's active role in the peacekeeping mission in Haiti.

President Pirc Musar's state visit will continue with a trip to Homa Bay, where she will deliver a speech at the main ceremony marking Kenya's Madaraka Day – a celebration of internal self-governance – and visit projects co-financed by Slovenia in the drought-stricken areas of northern Kenya.
