In her speech, President Pirc Musar underlined Slovenia's strong support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. "I welcome today's meeting as it provides an important platform to express our solidarity with Ukraine and reaffirms our unwavering support for its fundamental values," said the President, adding that Slovenia strongly condemns Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
She also highlighted alarming reports of rising civilian casualties. "July and August were the deadliest months for civilians in nearly two years. I am appalled by reports of airstrikes targeting residential buildings, hospitals, schools and energy infrastructure, aimed at making life unbearable for civilians ahead of the coming winter," the President stated. She emphasised that those responsible for these attacks must be held accountable and welcomed Ukraine's ratification of the Rome Statute.
The President also highlighted Slovenia's ongoing efforts to assist Ukraine, including both military and humanitarian support. "Slovenia has been helping Ukraine since the first day of the aggression and will continue to do so for as long as necessary. Our work on psychosocial rehabilitation is especially important. Just last week, we hosted a group of 50 Ukrainian children and adolescents traumatised by the war. I hope we were able to help them forget, if only for a moment, the horrors they should never have had to endure," she said.
In concluding the debate, she welcomed the collective efforts in support of Ukraine and emphasised the importance of a European future for the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. "The future of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia lies within the EU. Slovenia will remain a strong advocate for enlargement, as we believe it is a crucial investment in Europe's security, stability and prosperity," concluded President Pirc Musar.
As part of her participation in the Ukraine–Southeast Europe Summit, the Slovenian President held bilateral meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani Sadriu. Before the summit, she also met with representatives of the Lipa Slovenian cultural society, which operates in Dubrovnik.
