Response of the President of the Republic to the Signing of the Gaza Peace Agreement

I sincerely and with great relief welcome the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, and I support the signing of the Gaza peace agreement.

 May this agreement prove to be truly a historic milestone and the first step on the path toward lasting peace, political stability and economic cooperation, leading to an independent Palestinian state and ensuring security and prosperity for all the peoples of the region. Peace in the Middle East will only be possible if all countries in the region are willing to honestly confront the burdens of the past and take responsibility for building and sustaining peace in the future.

This agreement must therefore mark the beginning of a new era of trust, respect for human rights and the rule of law. In these historic moments, I express solidarity with all those who have suffered the consequences of the prolonged conflict, and I remain hopeful that this agreement will serve as a true foundation for lasting peace and a new beginning for the entire region.
