The main focus of the talks between the two Presidents was on current European and global challenges, with particular emphasis on future relations between the European Union and the United States of America. The Presidents agreed that strong transatlantic relations are essential for Europe’s stability, security and prosperity, as well as for effectively addressing global crises. The President of the Republic underlined that, in its relations with the United States, the European Union must act in a united and self-confident manner, as a reliable partner, while at the same time strengthening its strategic autonomy. The President expressed Slovenia’s concern regarding the marginalisation of multilateralism in decision-making by the United States and conveyed Slovenia’s solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and its people, including Greenland as an integral part of the Kingdom.
The discussions also touched upon developments in the Western Balkans, the enlargement of the European Union, the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. In this regard, President Pirc Musar highlighted the importance of a credible enlargement process and of joint European action based on international law, solidarity and respect for human rights. However, this process must be both faster and more effective, without lowering standards.
The talks also addressed the situation in the Middle East. The President of the Republic stressed the urgency of continuing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and the importance of respect for international law and United Nations resolutions. She noted that conditions in Gaza remain untenable for the civilian population and that it is therefore essential to ensure the safe, large-scale and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance. She further underlined the importance of a long-term political solution capable of ensuring lasting security and peace for all people in the region, and highlighted the essential role of diplomacy in fostering stability in the Middle East.
"I hold President Steinmeier in the highest regard as a statesman, a human being and a man of wisdom. At a time when some politicians build their public image on fostering division and on ill-considered populist moves, his calm and principled approach is a valuable reminder of the role that politics, or statespersons, should play," the President emphasised at today’s working meeting.
As part of the visit, the President of the Republic also attended a reception for the Slovenian and German cultural communities on the occasion of the forthcoming Slovenian Cultural Day. In her address, she underlined that culture is one of the fundamental pillars of Slovenian identity and an important bond between nations. "Culture strengthens democratic societies, fosters mutual understanding and offers a space for dialogue even in difficult times," President Pirc Musar emphasised in her address.
