A New Year's Message from the President of the Republic of Slovenia

Dear Slovenians in our country, across its borders and around the world,
Dear citizens,
Dear residents of Slovenia.

As the calendar year draws to a close, the rhythm of our lives naturally slows down. Towns and villages are bathed in festive light, and the streets fill with the scent of anticipation. We are embraced by an atmosphere of warmth and joy, born from the closeness of our loved ones and their small gestures of care.

For most of us, this is a precious time. Yet, many are not so fortunate – they cannot celebrate in peace, nor can they build their futures. The safety and dignity of every individual are priceless values; without them, the worth of all other goods fades. The profound importance of safety and dignity is understood most deeply by those who, even in these festive days, suffer the ravages of war or endure other hardships. We must not, and cannot, accept this widespread globalisation of indifference, as if we have no influence over it. In the new year, let us therefore be even more determined to build a society in which respect and compassion are stronger than fear and apathy. 

Slovenians have always been a peaceful people, standing in solidarity with others. We are devoted to our land, yet open to the world. We know that only through cooperation and mutual respect can we create a better future. Therefore, let us enter the new year with the awareness that we – as a nation, as a society and as co-creators of our shared life – are responsible for the most vulnerable, for the natural environment, for the elderly, for children and for future generations. In this historical moment, an individual alone does not have enough strength to drive social change; strength is nurtured and grows within a community that builds a welcoming home and a connected world through trust and solidarity.

We are part of the broader Slovenian, European and global community. With vision, determination and courage, we can become an inspiration, forging connections in the international arena. Let us therefore uphold and strengthen the values of the rule of law, mutual assistance and dignity, at home and around the world. 

Dear friends,

May wisdom, courage and compassion guide us in the new year. May we grow closer to one another – with understanding, trust and respect, and with a genuine desire for a better future. Above all, may our actions speak louder than words.
